Program Details

Healthcare continues to change at a rapid pace, and the need for more healthcare providers in both primary and specialty care persists. To accommodate these changes and demands, the healthcare community continues to evolve its workforce and care delivery models. Advanced practice providers (APPs) play a significant role in the team-based care paradigm, helping fill gaps in provider availability and accessibility and providing quality care to patients. Yet, as the number of APPs has grown, so too has the frequency of malpractice claims in which they are implicated as defendants.

This program explores the current healthcare landscape and risks involving APPs. The program also reviews key risk mitigation strategies, including credentialing, privileging, orientation, supervision, scope of practice, and communication recommendations.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

1. Discuss the current healthcare landscape and risks regarding advanced practice providers (APPs)
2. Explain key credentialing, privileging, orientation, and supervision risk mitigation strategies for APPs
3. Understand the importance of identifying a scope of practice for each APP that complies with state laws and regulations
4. Describe strategies to improve diagnostic accuracy and communication of test results
5. Identify effective communication strategies relating to collaborative and team-based care
