Program Details

Unanticipated outcomes and errors in treatment occur in modern medicine. Managing these unanticipated outcomes and errors is critical in maintaining positive patient relationships and managing potential professional liability exposure. This program explores the history of disclosure of unanticipated outcomes of treatment, including the current regulatory and strategic approach to disclosure. The program also covers handling the disclosure of unexpected outcomes from a practical and logistical standpoint.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

Define an unanticipated outcome and differentiate between the types of situations that can lead to unanticipated outcomes.
Describe the current ethical standards for disclosing unanticipated outcomes in healthcare settings.
Explain the concept of the “second victim” of unanticipated outcomes and identify strategies to support second victims.
List the components of the “communication and resolution” approach to disclosure.
Identify the key steps in the disclosure process and who should participate.
