Program Details

Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) face various risks in day-to-day practice. Medical errors, adverse outcomes, and near-misses can result from issues related to technical skill, clinical judgment, communication, documentation, clinical systems, and more. Although the concept and potential benefits of ASCs are exciting, they should not overshadow patient safety and risk concerns. This program explores common malpractice risks associated with ASCs. It also offers risk management strategies and tips that can be used to reduce the risk of patient injury, mitigate professional liability exposure, and—in the event of litigation—contribute to a strong defense.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Understand the medical professional liability (MPL) claims trends related to ambulatory surgery
  2. Describe the importance of effective patient selection techniques and how they can impact patient safety, efficiency, and reportable outcomes related to ambulatory surgery
  3. Explain how the consent discussion and patient understanding significantly affect case resolution
  4. Identify mitigation strategies for intraoperative risks, including noise and distractions, medication safety, retained surgical items, wrong-site surgeries, and medical emergencies
  5. Discuss the importance of multidisciplinary planning and effective communication relating to recovery and discharge after ambulatory surgery
