Program Details

Although uncommon, medical emergencies do occur in the normal course of dental practice. If these events are not handled properly, the effects on both the patient and the practice can be catastrophic.

In this program, we will discuss recommendations regarding the preparation for, handling of, and follow-up to a medical emergency occurring in the dental office. We will also discuss the proper preparation for the administration of sedation in the dental office setting.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. List the more common medical emergencies that can occur in the dental office
  2. Describe patients who are particularly likely to develop an emergency medical condition in the dental office
  3. Explain the four essential components in preparing for a dental/medical emergency
  4. Identify the unique risks accompanying the use of in-office dental sedation
  5. Evaluate individual clinical settings for risk exposures related to medical emergencies
