Program Details

Managing risks and striving to keep patients safe is utmost for healthcare organizations. Despite serious and widespread efforts to improve healthcare quality, however, preventable harm to patients occurs every day. An established approach to mitigating risks in organizations will ensure success in providing quality care to patients and financial sustainability.

This program explores the concept of risk management, the evolution of enterprise risk management, and the risk management decision-making process. The program also covers the development of a risk program, the roles and scope of a risk management professional, the elements of a risk management plan, and the overarching concept of patient safety.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

1. Define healthcare risk management and understand its importance in mitigating risk
2. Describe risks facing providers and organizations
3. Outline the evolution of risk management in healthcare
4. Identify key elements of the risk management program
5. Explain the overarching patient safety concept and the intersection of risk management and quality management
